Your new role and workplace.
As an intern within the Data Differentiation Department (DDP), you will contribute directly to improving how users interact with operational insights from Azure Databricks. You will work together with colleagues from the DDP Tech Platform team to investigate how Generative AI can make complex Databricks system table information accessible through natural language interactions.

Currently, Databricks users within Albert Heijn have limited or no easy access to meaningful insights from Azure Databricks system tables. Although these tables contain valuable operational data related to costs, jobs, clusters, lineage, and audit events, users are required to manually understand the table structures, combine datasets, and write technical queries themselves. This creates a high barrier for adoption and limits accessibility of the available insights.

During this graduation assignment, you will investigate whether GenAI can help bridge this gap by creating a persona-driven assistant capable of answering natural language questions such as:

  • What are the jobs that cost me the most?
  • Which jobs take the longest to run?
  • What is the average runtime of a cluster?
  • Who consumes my table?

As part of the assignment, you will compare two possible solution directions:

  • Databricks’ out-of-the-box AI solution: Genie.
  • A custom-built solution using agents and/or MCP servers hosted on Databricks Apps.

A key requirement of the assignment is ensuring that users only receive information they are authorized to access. Security, governance, and persona-specific access control will therefore play an important role in the design.

During your internship, you will work on:

  • Analyzing Azure Databricks system tables and their available insights.
  • Defining user personas and identifying their information needs.
  • Designing a secure and scalable GenAI solution architecture.
  • Building and validating a working prototype.
  • Comparing the different solution approaches on criteria such as answer quality, performance, maintainability, extensibility, and governance.
  • Exploring, as a stretch goal, a security-focused persona for analyzing audit log data.

This internship offers hands-on experience with Generative AI, cloud platforms, data governance, analytics, and modern data platform architecture. You will collaborate with both technical and business stakeholders and contribute to a practical recommendation for how Albert Heijn can provide secure and accessible Databricks insights at scale.

In this role, you work 32-40 hours per week, partly from our head office in Zaandam and partly from home.

We believe it is important that everyone at Albert Heijn can be themselves in an environment that welcomes different perspectives and values curiosity and collaboration. For this internship, we especially encourage candidates who strengthen the diversity of our teams in the broadest sense of the word.

What we offer you.

  • An interesting and versatile graduation internship at the headquarters of Albert Heijn for 5/6 months, starting in September 2026.
  • A challenging internship with real responsibilities and practical impact.
  • An internship allowance (€500 gross per four weeks) plus travel reimbursement.
  • Social events and networking opportunities with fellow interns.
  • An inclusive environment where you can continuously develop yourself both personally and professionally.

What you bring.
With more than 125,000 colleagues, we help millions of customers every day. And hopefully soon together with you as our new intern. Especially if you bring analytical thinking and a strong interest in AI, cloud technology, and data platforms.

Additionally:

  • You are currently pursuing a HBO or WO degree, preferably in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • You have affinity with Generative AI, cloud platforms, and data analytics.
  • You are comfortable working with structured and technical datasets.
  • Experience with Azure, Databricks, Python, SQL, APIs, or AI/LLM concepts is a strong plus.
  • If you combine a passion for technology and innovation with strong communication skills, that is a great match.

Furthermore, you are:

  • Curious and eager to learn.
  • Analytical and solution-oriented.
  • Proactive enough to independently investigate challenges and propose improvements.
